There are lots of concerns that need to be addressed before owning a pet. There is the
issue of space, time, commitment level, size of the pet, age of your child, budget, etc. However, everything
boils down to what type of pet you want to own. Take note of the information below. This can help you make the
right decision when choosing the best caged pet for your child.
Guinea pigs- have an average lifespan of 4 to 7 years. They can be easily
handled, can be tamed easily, and are very friendly. They can easily adapt under normal conditions both indoors and
outdoors.
Fancy Mice- have an average lifespan of 2 to 3 years. They are inexpensive to
buy and to keep. A mouse can live with other mice easily inside one cage. They are easily tamed and very lively,
especially at night.
Fancy Rats- live for about 2 to 5 years. Rats can be very good pets for curious
and playful children since they require being handled a lot. They are generally kept in a very large cage and kept
indoors. Since rats are very active, they have to be kept in a very busy room in the house.
Rabbits- live for about 7 years. They are very active so they may need large
hutches. Rabbits require careful handling so they are not an advisable pet for little children. They need to
have a large space to play and run around, preferably outside, although these days, many owners keep them
indoors.
Cats- have a longer lifespan. They can live for 15 years or longer. They may
not always have to be inside the cage. Cats are very independent, naturally clean, and very easy to care for.
Goldfish- can live up to 25 years. Well, they do not live in a typical mesh
cage but can still be a great pet. Goldfish need to be with other goldfish. The cost of ownership is very cheap and
they are easy to keep.
Hamsters- live for up to 2 years. They are easy to keep since they can survive
on their own. Hamsters may bite if not tamed through regular handling. Just like others in the rodent family,
hamsters are nocturnal (they are awake at night).
Budgerigar and other small birds- can live for 5 years or so. Birds like to
live with other birds. They should be kept in a cage large enough to fly around in.
